From the Director
Sugar Maples Center for Creative Arts recognizes that every one of us has stories to tell and imaginations to be inspired. The Center’s 2022 program offers workshop explorations in Ceramics, Painting, Drawing, Photography and Fibers. Our classes are taught by renowned artists and designers who navigate their lives with the belief that Art is uniquely positioned to inspire and create a more inclusive world. We are proud to invite you to our exquisite campus high up in the Catskill Mountains to be your “home” as you undertake your journey in the various media we offer.
As the world has appeared to jolt on its axis with the Covid19 pandemic and emerging environmental challenges, the cognitive dissonance felt by many serves as a warning. It is time to look towards a greater purpose; one that is equitable and healthy for all of us and for the natural world. It is a finely tuned balance. Your support for the Center is deeply appreciated by all who pass through its doors.
I was born in Wolverhampton, England to Sikh parents. My father worked in a factory that produced Goodyear tires for aircraft. Their attention to detail was not only critical to industry, it came to be our family’s raison d’etre. My mother insisted upon our immersion in cultural traditions. I have a deep appreciation for those desires we hold dear and that languages of Art can express.
It gives me great pleasure to be part of the Catskill Mountain Foundation. I am honored to be the Director of Sugar Maples Center for Creative Arts and to bring my experiences in the Arts and a passion for those things that make us human.
We look forward to making your acquaintance.
Kulvinder Kaur Dhew
From the Chairman and President, Catskill Mountain Foundation
We are very pleased to welcome Kulvinder Kaur Dhew as the new Director of Sugar Maples. She and her husband, Bruce Dehnert, have a long history with Sugar Maples. Both have taught classes at Sugar Maples over the years, and Bruce led the team that built our outdoor kiln. Bruce is joining us as the head of our Ceramics program.
Both Kulvinder and Bruce join us from the well-known crafts center at Peter’s Valley. Kulvinder is hoping to turn Sugar Maples into a year-round arts school, and we are enthusiastic about this plan. She will be expanding the number of courses offered and also expanding the Sugar Maples program into new art media. We look forward to an exciting future for Sugar Maples under Kulvinder’s leadership.
Peter and Sarah Finn
It is with great joy in my heart that I bring you important news. We are privileged to welcome Kulvinder Kaur Dhew as the new Director of Sugar Maples. Kulvinder has a rich and varied background in art and academia. She has a Masters in Painting from the renowned Royal College of Art and eventually went on to become an art educator, workshop leader, professional curator and to hold developmental positions in academia and has been Head of Departments of Art. Kulvinder’s large-scale paintings and exquisite drawings are included in many esteemed collections worldwide. It is through this success that she has been a mentor and role model for many young artists. Having been an Artist in Residence at numerous places in the U.S. and overseas, Kulvinder will bring her unique experience and knowledge to all aspects of guiding our Center into its bright future.
I am also pleased to announce that Bruce Dehnert has been appointed as Sugar Maples’ new Head of Ceramics. Many of you may know Bruce who is an important artist in the international clay community. He has been the Head of Ceramics at Peters Valley for 22 years and over that time has grown their program enormously. He has designed and built kilns of all kinds across our country and taught at universities and art centers. His award-winning sculptures have been shown internationally and he is currently curator of prestigious ceramic exhibitions. Bruce’s work has been featured in many books & magazines and he remains active as a writer. He is the recipient of the New Jersey Artist’s Fellowship Award, a three-time Fletcher Challenge International Awardee and is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics.
I first met Kulvinder and Bruce in 1991 when I taught at Peters Valley. We have been close friends since that time and they both have been instrumental in helping me grow Sugar Maples over the years. And importantly, Bruce has built and maintained our kilns. We are so fortunate to have both Kulvinder and Bruce at Sugar Maples, please join me in welcoming them! Hope to see you this summer as I will certainly be around campus! Warm wishes and stay healthy!
