About the performance

Jerome Rose, hailed as “the Last Romantic of our own age” and one of America’s most distinguished pianists, has been heard in major concert halls across five continents. A Gold Medalist from the International Busoni Competition, Mr. Rose began his international career while still in his early twenties. Heralded as an internationally acclaimed artist, Mr. Rose will perform at the Doctorow Center for the Arts on Saturday, June 20 at 7:00 PM for the benefit of the Academy of Fortepiano Performance, a program of the Catskill Mountain Foundation’s Piano Performance Museum.

The concert includes Brahms Rhapsodies, Op. 79, consisting of two passionate movements that are characteristic of the late Romantic period. Mr. Rose will also play Schubert’s Sonata in C minor, one of Schubert’s last major compositions for solo piano, written in the early nineteenth century. The evening will end with Liszt’s Sonata in B minor, a masterpiece that is arguably the greatest piece ever written for solo piano.

Mr. Rose’s performance will benefit the Academy of Fortepiano Performance, an annual music residency directed by Audrey Axinn and Maria Rose. Dr. Axinn is known for her sensitive and compelling performances and creative ornamentation in music by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. She has collaborated with notable string players including Cynthia Roberts, Monica Huggett, Sharon Robinson, Eugene Fodor and Daniel Heifetz. Dr. Axinn teaches solo piano and collaborative piano at Mannes School of Music, and teaches chamber music on fortepianos at The Juilliard School. Dr. Rose combines her experience as a fortepiano performer with her research as a musicologist. She has performed extensively as a solo performer and in chamber music, and has a PhD in Musicology from New York University. Ms. Rose has written many articles and lectured on piano performance practice.Together, Drs. Axinn and Rose teach and guide up and coming fortepianists who have the opportunity to play historical instruments that are with original or reproductions of instruments played by master musicians.
