The Labyrinth Baroque Ensemble, founded in 2015 by director, lutenist and scholar Richard Kolb, performs a tale of intrigue, confusion, and romance in modern-day Paris, created by Artistic Director Richard Kolb with staging by mezzosoprano Tracy Cowart. The program features vocal and instrumental music by French and Italian composers of the mid-17th century in a story inspired by visits to Paris in the 1640s by the celebrated Roman virtuosa Leonora Baroni and the composer Luigi Rossi. Contrasting the passionate sensitivity and tunefulness of French Airs de cour with the flamboyance and virtuosity of Italian arias and sonatas, Disdain and Fascination is an aurally and visually enticing entertainment staged with four distinguished specialists in the art of Baroque singing, with a chamber orchestra and a continuo group of harpsichord, theorbo, and double bass.
