Horton by the Stream presents 1918

Horton by the Stream, Greene County’s longest running Outdoor Summer Theater, collaborates with the Catskill Mountain Foundation for its first Indoor Season.

After 27 years on our outdoor stage in Elka Park NY, Horton by the Stream, an outdoor summer theater project celebrating the work of two-time Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize winning writer Horton Foote moves into the Doctorow Center, in collaboration with the Catskill Mountain Foundation.

1918, the third play of the nine part Orphan’s Home Cycle, takes place in the fictional town of Harrison Texas modeled after his own hometown of Wharton. in 1918 we meet a young Horace Robedeaux. It is the last pandemic exactly 100 years ago. Horace is newly married and starting off in life and in business. Just as he starts to get his footing with a dry goods store, in comes the Spanish influenza and the last pandemic. Masks, premature death and illness and a changed landscape two years later is the result then just as it is now in 2022.

Horton by the Stream was founded in 1995 by Frank Girardeau. Frank had worked with Horton on A Trip to Bountiful, The Death of Papa, The Traveling Lady, The Roads to Home and Talking Pictures in regional and NY venues such as the Goodman Theater in Chicago, the Lambs Theater in NY, the Signature Theater in NY and Hartford Stage Company in CT. Gregory Grove, Co-Producer, has performed Off Broadway in Sister Mary Ignatious Explains it All for You, and On Broadway in Lone Star by Jim McClure. Janet Girardeau, Co Producer, has performed at Ensemble Studio Theater in Stay Away a Little Closer by John Ford Noonan, Julie Johnson by Wendy McLeod and in the world tour of Mabou Mines Dollhouse. The company consists of professionals centered in NYC and delighted to come to the fresh air of the Catskills to work on a play with the resonance and humanity of Horton Foote’s astute and keen portrayals.

Horton Foote, an American treasure, is celebrated by Horton by the Stream in its 28th year. Come and enjoy an afternoon by the cool mountain stream with refreshments at one of our area farm to table restaurants afterwards.
