Catskill Mountain Foundation’s Academy of Fortepiano Performance cofounders Audrey Axinn, Maria Rose, and Yi-heng Yang will perform live at the Doctorow Center for the Arts on Saturday, November 6, 2021, playing works by Beethoven, Dussek, and Schumann. This performance will be one of the few live performances presented by Catskill Mountain Foundation this year, as audiences venture out once again to experience the sights and sounds of live music.
Axinn will perform Beethoven Bagatelles, Opus 33, on the Conrad Graf piano (1826). Rose will perform Sonata op. 61 by Jan Ladislav Dussek, also called “Élégie harmonique”, on the Broadwood grand piano (mid 19th c.). Yang will perform Novellettes op. 21 by Robert Schumann on the 1826 Graf piano. The recently-acquired Graf piano is part of the Catskill Mountain Foundation’s Piano Performance Museum collection of valuable original instruments, which also includes the Clementi square piano (1803, a Pleyel pianino (1840) and a grand piano by Erard Frères (1873).
“Somehow that opening of heart-felt suffering in ‘Élégie Harmonique’ seems very appropriate at this time of loss, anxiety, and uncertainty after a year-and-a half of dealing with the Covid pandemic, comparable to the experience of people during wartime.“ -- Maria Rose, Academy of Fortepiano Performance cofounder
With the Academy of Fortepiano Performance summer workshop over, Axinn, Rose and Yang have returned to their academic and professional worlds, while they commit to recording opportunities and look forward to next summer’s workshop. Ms. Rose and Ms. Yang will continue to organize Academy of Fortepiano Performance International Fortepiano Salons, bringing live-streamed panel discussions and excerpts of performances to a growing audience of participants from all around the world.
The Academy of Fortepiano Performance is funded in part by donations from private individuals and the Jarvis and Constance Doctorow Family Foundation.
About the Academy of Fortepiano Performance

Hosted by the Catskill Mountain Foundation Piano Performance Museum in the idyllic mountain setting of Hunter, New York, the intimate performance hall, impressive piano museum, and comfortable student lodging are all in close proximity to each other and just 2 1/2 hours north of New York City. The Academy is open to students, professionals, and adult amateurs.
