Ballet Hispánico, America’s premier Latino dance organization, will conduct a two week residency during which Company members will work with students and learners of all ages, including incarcerated youth. The residency will culminate in a performance of works that reflect America’s changing cultural landscape.
An excerpt from a forthcoming World Premiere by Carlos Pons Guerra reimagines Federico Garcia Lorca’s 1936 play, The House of Bernarda Alba. This new work infuses the classic tale of repression and family intrigue with the theatricality and larger-than-life personas of Latino film and telenovelas. 3. Catorce Dieciseis, drawing inspiration from the number Pi, reflects on the circularity of movement through life, with intense theatricality and breathtaking imagery set to music by Vivaldi and other Baroque composers. Con Brazos Abiertos, a fun, frank look at a life caught between two cultures, intertwines folkloric details with a distinctly contemporary voice in dance, set to music that ranges from Julio Iglesias to rock en español. Bury Me Standing, a ballet reflecting the unique culture and emotional essence of the Gypsy or “Roma”, explores their strong communal bonds, sensuality, feelings of oppression and longing, and their strength and exuberance.
Since 2009, Ballet Hispánico has been led by Eduardo Vilaro, an acclaimed choreographer and a former member of the Company. Ballet Hispánico’s rich repertory of over 100 works expands on founder Tina Ramirez’s legacy of exploring the diversity of Latino culture through a fusion of classical, Latin, and contemporary dance.
