This dramatic tale is the story of a strong-minded New York farm woman who marries on the eve of the Civil War.  Her husband leaves to fight the next day, and, when his letters cease, Amelia embarks on a journey to find him.  Going through the landscape torn by the force of battle, she encounters soldiers on both sides, a runaway slave, a battlefield surgeon, starving civilians and always, the wounded and the dead.  Following clues to his whereabouts, Amelia ends her journey disguised as a Union soldier in the infamous Andersonville prison, where 13,000 Northern prisoners-of-war died.
