Jewelry Design and Dichroic Glass Cabochan Making

Dichroic glass is a magical glass with a glowing luster and a rainbow of colors that make a dynamic statement. Cabochons of dichroic glass can be used in jewelry making or as an accent in a larger piece. On the first day, students will cut out random pieces
of dichroic glass and sandwich them between layers of clear glass creating
a slab. This slab will be melted at 1350 degrees Fahrenheit. While waiting, you will prepare silver hoops and create a beaded necklace to attach your cabochon to. Day 2 your slab is cooled and ready to cut into various sizes. Sandwiching the silver hoop with matching pieces of glass, and your dichroic slab pieces, the pieces are then re-melted together to create a completed cabochon. Once cooled you will use your cabochon to create a wearable piece of art by adding it to a beaded necklace or using a silver chain. You will love creating wearable art for yourself, friends, family and you may even consider a new line of work like jewelry making.
