May 2008 - My Walk with Rodger

I got back to the trail and, naturally, no Rodger. A quick look down to check for the worst thankfully revealed nothing. “Come on,” I heard him say from 40 yards above, so I threw the camera over my shoulder and scurried along to catch up to him, not a little surprised.

We walked and talked and shot pictures. I walked behind him a lot so I could act as a barrier in case he slipped that way. But there were trail sections with a steep drop off to the side to consider. There was no use being behind him there, so I’d hop alongside to be at the right place if he slipped toward the fall line, not that that was always so clear. Hikers will appreciate the comical, if not potentially tragi-comical, situation. Imagine walking a 200-pound toddler, without holding hands, on a wet, steep mountain path and you have an idea of what I’m describing.

But the desire to keep going despite the risk was just too hard to resist for Rodger and me.
