Beautiful Colors
October 2006
We have those beautiful colors again! When photographers catch them, they create remarkable images. We see one of those in our cover photograph, “Alder Lake” by Margaret Ramirez, as she points her camera at a spectacular view of a hillside covered with red and orange. She doubles the impact by capturing its reflection in the still water below. The sky is quite clear with only a few strands of clouds, so we have a lovely blue above and below. It is first place winner in our annual Catskill Region photography contest in the “Mountains” category.
On the left side of the first spread we see the second place winner, Christine Atlee’s photograph of a mountain scene. Here there is a lovely sunlit field in the foreground, with dark evergreens in the middle, and a spectacular view of early snow on the mountains. The unusual blue shadows on the mountain create a fine color combination with the yellow below.
On the right is our third place winner in the same category, called “Sunset over Township Valley” by photographer Richard LaBombard. The colors are remarkable in the sky as the sun is setting behind the mountain. It is a rare sight, for it looks as if there is an enormous fire reaching upwards, with the yellow and red contrasting with the dark evening shadow on the mountain below.
In the next double page spread, we see two sky scenes. On the left, photographer John Nugent captures a colorful rainbow against an unusual cloud formation. We don’t know where the rain came from because we see a patch of blue sky above, but the darkness of the background gives an excellent frame for the colors of the rainbow.
On the right we see another sunset sky scene. This photograph is by Chris Lopez and it captures unusual yellow streaks of clouds in the lower part of the sky. The dark ground provides a base for the image, and the red reflections on the clouds above are seen against the early evening images on top.
In the next spread, there is a delicate black and white photograph called “Rock Wave” by Christopher Jordan. It must have been an overcast day since there is no sign of sunshine in the photograph. The forms of the rock in the foreground do look like a wave, and the dense forest creates a soft background.
In the photograph on the right, the sun is shining in full glory in what is called “Mohonk in Fall.” Here, the photographer, Michael Coluccio, captures the landscape scene with bright green in the foreground, orange and green in the middle, impressive blue-green on the cliff above, and a lovely blue sky on top. The bright sunshine clearly brings out the full glory of the fall colors.
We end with a more subdued landscape by Randy Williams. Pumpkins are lying on the grass in a wide field, with dark trees and mountains in the rear. There is a partially cloudy sky above. As always, whenever pumpkins are part of the photograph, their orange color provides accents for the October scene.
