Walks We'd Like to Take

July 2004

Walking through the woods alongside streams or in open meadows is one of the joys of summer in the Catskill region. The air is clean and fresh and when the sun shines down on the trees and streams we can see beautiful colors and forms that transform nature into an artist’s canvas.

This selection of photographs contains wonderful examples of scenes our photographers have discovered while walking in the country.

Our cover photograph shows a lovely stream pouring over the rocks, with sunlit foliage in the background. Our photographer couldn’t have found a more pleasing composition as he aimed his camera at that lovely scene.

The next spread presents two other images of streams surrounded by rocks and foliage, their currents forming gentle waterfalls. While enjoying the wonderful forms created by the waters as they flow through the mountains, one should always be careful when walking on the slippery rocks strewn along the edges.

Then we see two unusual landscape views. The one on the left appears to have been taken from a high point, perhaps one of the scenic overlooks that dot the area, looking down on a beautiful expanse. We can imagine the photographer climbing up to the height from which he took the photograph and capturing the panoramic view he sees in front of him.

On the right we see an unusual photograph of what appears to be a moonlit landscape. The photographer has taken a nice stroll in the evening and managed to keep his shutter open long enough to record the hills in the distance as well as a delightful and mysterious weathervane secured to a wooden fence pole.

The mist in the next photograph has helped the photographer create a dreamlike image of a delicate stand of small lavender flowers, with a tree overhanging and an empty chair sitting in the midst of a field. We can imagine passersby stopping for a moment to sit in the chair to enjoy the peaceful, fragrant setting.

Opposite is a photograph of a beautiful blue sky with a few delicate clouds whose shadows are moving across the landscape. The dark foreground provides a lovely frame for this panoramic view.

And finally, we end with a remarkable image of a rainbow coming from passing gray rain clouds, which the photographer has caught at just the right moment. The sun is already reemerging and the distant trees are beginning to brighten. If we look carefully, we can also make out a second rainbow further in the distance.
