The Spectacular Images of Autumn
October 2003
We might imagine that Mother Nature has decided to bless the passage from summer to autumn with brilliant colors to compensate for the imminent disappearance of the lovely foliage that graces our hills and valleys. Perhaps that’s why our cover photograph seems so poignant – a single leaf, perfectly shaped, spotted with brilliant reds and yellows, against the white and gray bark of a birch tree that presages the colder weather that lies ahead. At least that’s a poetic way of interpreting the image.
The next spread features two beautiful scenes. On the left we see a pond reflecting the red colors of autumn leaves and a clear blue sky above in a fine composition framed by the trunks of two trees leaning inward. And on the right we see the superb view of fall colors gracing a hillside, with distant hills in the background.
Then the photographer’s camera moves nearer, and on the left we see a thin tree trunk surrounded by reds and yellows and greens, and on the right we find ourselves up close to a brilliant cluster of leaves. When we turn the page, we see a wonderful composition on the left of an old barn framed by red trees in the background and uncut yellow and green growth in front encircling what appears to be an abandoned plow. Opposite, the camera turns upward and we see trees pointing to the sky with rich red leaves filling the page.
We end with a panoramic scene of forest trees trailing off into the distance with dark clouds looming in the sky.
We celebrate autumn with these lovely images that pay homage to the colors and moods of the season.
