Sunrise from Giant Ledge

We chose this image of a mist resting in the valleys of a mountain range for the first prize. Here there are no clouds in the sky, and the sun can barely be glimpsed on the horizon. Since the sky is so clear we wonder if this is a sunrise rather than a sunset, but there is no way to know for sure. What is especially remarkable is the way the tops of the mountains emerge from the mist and create the sense of a vast panorama. This impression is heightened by the subtle shadings of the mountains, moving from the black shadow in the foreground to the light gray in the distance, and the way the forms are tapered to meet in the center as if they were the shores of an enormous lake. We congratulate the photographer for his impressive image of a grand landscape.
