The Gift of Autumn
October 2001
In this month’s portfolio, we are pleased to publish a collection of photographs by J. Gerard Smith and Ellin Pollachek that can both sooth our souls and bring a sense of peace to our hearts.
When we are all doing our best to recover from the September 11th tragedy, it is heartening to see these photographs of beauty and happiness.
The spectacular view of the Hudson River, with the fall colors just emerging in the foliage and the mountains etched so clearly in the background, helps to clear our mind of the painful thoughts that have been so overwhelming in the past few weeks. The photograph of clouds seen against a deep blue sky and hovering over the waters below speaks to us of calm, of peacefulness, and of those eternal values that we need to reaffirm even in times of tragedy. In other photographs the golden leaves fill our eyes and hearts with the richness of this moment in time, and we recognize the aging of nature as an especially glorious part of life. A detail shot of the season’s delightful pumpkins bring us a welcome taste of the holiday spirit.
And what could be more heartwarming than the photograph on this month’s cover – with the smile of the youngster proudly holding her overflowing prize of newly picked apples. It is an unforgettable image that marvelously expresses our appreciation for the gift of autumn.
