Winter Horizons
February 2001
The photographs in this month's portfolio show contrasts and similarities between the winter sky and icy landscapes in the Catskills.
When there is a wide expanse of snow with no tree or mountains in sight, the sky seems almost contiguous with the land, and we can imagine being in the icy wilderness of the north or south pole. When we look at a forest on the banks of a stream, the blue sky is like a jewel seen through a myriad of branches. When gray clouds in the sky can be seen hovering over the mountains, they seem to be a quiet echo of the bristling icicles on bushes.
We have three beautiful views of a setting (or a rising) sun. In one, the sun is reflected in the pink sky which, like the blue snow seems to be made of pastel colors with a line of trees providing an accent in the middle. In another the sun highlights a scattering of frozen branches against the darkness below. And in the third, the sun has fallen below the horizon and projects a golden hue to the clouds floating above the light blue sky, all framed by the early evening shadows on the trees mountains.
