SUGAR MAPLES

Podell Library Treasure Hunt

FIND THE TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS!

Contest Saturday, May 24th, at 2:00pm
at the Podell Library in Sugar Maples.

  1. Two hundred dollars is hidden in one of the books on the first floor of  the Albert Podell Library at the Sugar Maples Center for Arts in Maplecrest.
  2. The first contestant to find the money before 4:00pm keeps it. Contestants can work individually or as a team. This contest is open to anyone, except employees of the Catskill Mountain Foundation, the Sugar Maples faculty, and their families. Contestants under 18 years will be given their first clue at 2:30pm; older contestants will start at 2:45.
  3. To find the money, you need to correctly follow six clues that are contained in six books. Each clue will lead to another book, until you reach the fifth book, which will give you the clue to the book that holds the money. (Note that some clues could lead you to several books, only one of which will contain the next clue. For example, a quote from Shakespeare could lead you to a book of his collected works, or to a book having only the particular play from which that quote comes, or to the Shakespeare section in a book of quotations, of to those words in his biography, etc., so do not give up if you don't find it in the first or second book in which you look.)
  4. There will be seven different sets of clues to lead contestants to the prize, and the first of these will be randomly distributed among the contestants at the start. If, after 30 minutes of trying, you have not found the prize, you can return to  the librarian and receive a different set of clues. (The purpose of the different sets is to avoid having all the contestants trying to look in the same book at the same time.)
  5. The contest will involve a knowledge of  literature, poetry, history, art, current events, and science plus some  awareness of where the various categories of books are located in the Library  plus the ability to use reference books..
  6. Since the contest is a race and speed is vital, contestants will do best if they come to the Library before the contest begins and familiarize themselves with the layout so they know where the different categories of books are located.
  7. If you can't figure out a certain clue, you should use the books in the reference section to help you. The reference books are in the white bookcase in the center of the library. If you still can't figure it out, Albert Podell will be in the Library, and each team is allowed to ask him for one hint during the contest.
  8. No computers can be used.
  9. Once you have found and read a clue in a book, you must promptly replace that clue in that book in the same page where you found it, and promptly replace that book on the shelf in the same place where you found it so that the other contestants have the same opportunity to find it. Anyone violating this rule will be immediately disqualified from this and future contests at the library
  10. Tactical Tip: To prevent other contestants form seeing in which book you are looking, you might want to shield it with your body when you look at it.
  11. If nobody has found the $200 by 4:00 o'clock, the contest will end and another contest will be held on August for a prize of $300.

Good  luck!
