In Our Mountains

September 2005

September is the month when summer turns to autumn. The children go back to school and the adults remember the good times they had on vacation. The first signs of the fall colors are arriving and we are getting ready to celebrate them. Our cover photograph of “Roxsbury Hillside” by Skip Malley strikes the perfect note. Tints of brown and orange against the green spread across the mountainside with the sun somewhere above and a beautiful cloud in the middle of the sky. This image won first place in the Mountain category of our annual photography contest.

The double-page image of “The Ridge” photographed by Linda J. Wilkinson portrays a cloudy day, but the composition of the clouds provides a lovely contrast to the flat field below and the mountains in the distance. The dark trees in the center adds strength to the composition, as do the colored flowers in the foreground. This photograph won an honorable mention in the Mountain category of our photography contest.

We next see two images of dark foliage under bright blue skies. On the left is “East Branch, Delaware River Valley” by K.O. Wilson, with the striking branches of a barren tree in the foreground against the rich green foliage. The sky is strikingly clear and there is mist in the valley. One can almost feel the late summer air in the landscape. This image won second place in the Mountain category of our photography contest. And on the right is “I Can See for Miles” by Gary Kitchen, this time with some clouds against the blue sky. Standing on the top of a rocky ledge, the photographer creates a strong composition with the bright rocky foreground and the dark foliage in the distance. This image won third place in the Mountain Category of our photography contest.

We then have another double page spread, this time with a panoramic scene by Herb Chong called “Wittenberg View.” We seem to be high up in the mountains looking out at a grand scene, with a river way off in the distance, and sunlit clouds hovering in the sky above. This image also won an honorable mention in the Mountain category of our photography contest.

We end with” Catskill Sunset” by Mark McCarroll. He catches the sun just as it is sinking behind the mountain, lighting the few clouds above in a sensitive composition. The dark trees in the foreground and the grey hills in the distance provide a perfect frame for this scenic view of the end of the day. This image also won third place in the Mountain category.
