Sunset at Ashokan Reservoir

Our third prize is another sunset scene. We are surprised ourselves that we are drawn so strongly to this time of day when colors and shapes of shadows create such striking compositions. We don’t mean to imply that some of the best landscape photographs are taken at dawn or dusk. It just so happens that among the submissions we received these seemed to us to be especially striking. Here, once again, the photographer’s eye has captured an extraordinary composition. We don’t see the sun itself since it is behind the mountain in the distance, but we do see the shadows on the water that frame the reflection of the golden sky, and the patterns they create are mesmerizing.
