The Early Light of Eagle Mountain

Sunsets in general are among the most glorious sights we human beings are privileged to behold. They hold their colors only for seconds, and watching them is like seeing a picture in motion. The light of the sun falls on clouds in unpredictable ways, and each sunset is unique. Although they fill the sky with such glorious colors, they are rarely chosen as subjects of paintings, perhaps because they seem unreal, or because they are considered overly romantic. But here the photographer, Robert Hsu, has captured a superbly composed scene with the juxtaposition of the dark hill on the horizon and the brilliant red reflections in the streaming clouds above. The color gradations of the sky, barely seen on the edges of the photograph, range over the whole spectrum, from yellow to purple, complementing the colors in the clouds. It is not only the glory of this particular sunset that makes this such a remarkable photograph, but the eye of the artist who so perfectly captured this particular moment and composed the image in the camera viewfinder with such great sensitivity.
