Celebrating Washington Irving and John Burroughs
Date: Saturday, April 4, 2:00pm Location: Village Square Bookstore & Literary Arts Center, Rte 23A, Main St., Village of Hunter, NY Information: 518 263 2050 Free admission
For the average tourist, April in the Catskills conjures images of fly-fishing and maple syrup. Few realize that it is also the birthday of two of the region's most celebrated authors, Washington Irving and John Burroughs, or that both of these important American men-of-letters were born on the same day, April 3, fifty-four years apart. To celebrate this important date, the Village Square Bookstore will feature a reading of "Rip Van Winkle," one of Washington Irving's most beloved and well-known tales, and excerpts from the writings on American Naturalist John Burroughs. In honor of these two great Catskills' writers, the Washington Irving Inn, between Hunter Village and Tannersville, is offering a free piece of homemade birthday cake from 3-4pm.
