La Traviata

By Giuseppe Verdi
Directed by Liliana Cavani
Conducted by Lorin Maazel

“La traviata" means The Woman Who Strayed, and the opera tells the story of Violetta Valery, a famed courtesan. When Violeta falls in love with Alfredo Germont, a young nobleman, she leaves her lifestyle to go live with him in the country. Alfredo's father finds out and demands Violetta leave his son for the sake of his family. Violetta reluctantly agrees. Convinced she is leaving him for another man Alfredo humiliates and denounces Violetta. Alfredo's father finally tells Alfredo the truth and sends him to Violetta to ask for her forgiveness. She dies in Alfredo's arms.

The opera is third on Opera America's list of the 20 most-performed operas in North America.
