Art Talk with FranciaPainter and World TravelerDate: Saturday, April 10, 2 pm – 3 pm
Most every summer Francia works en plein air in the countryside of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. But when she returns home, she distills her rich experiences overseas into small scale works on board. These intimate pieces, conceived in gem-like colors have a surreal, almost diarist quality; and if the imagery is enigmatic, it is also intensely personal. Keys float over verdant countryside, open portals loom over closed gates, grave markers line empty streets that disappear into impossibly raked perspective. Surrounding every piece is some sort of framing device - a dark proscenium-like arch or golden filigree with gothic accents. With this device Francia seems to be telling us that it's good to get a little distance from life. Framing events dispassionately, but beautifully, she begins to make emotional sense of the past without robbing it of its mystery.
