Quadricentennial Exhibition: The Writer as IllustratorHudson Talbott, Thomas Locker, Carl Chaiet, Judith Orseck KatzDate: August 29 through October 4, 2009
Four artists who write and illustrate their own books: Hudson Talbott, Thomas Locker, Carl Chaiet and Judith Orseck Katz. Hudson Talbott is an award-winning author of 14 books for young adults, including River of Dreams, the Story of the Hudson River; the Camelot series; Forging Freedom, the true story of Jaap Penraat who rescued over 400 people from the Nazis in his native Amsterdam, and more. Carl Chaiet, with his partner Lynn Kearcher, created the characters, Telford and Earnest, as a way to explore the possibilities of the narrative as "the most important means of human expression". Chaiet's rich illustrations bring the story line to life in a way that is rare in the world of children's books. These unique books introduce young readers to a bygone era where the importance of beauty, detail, and thoughtfulness were commonplace. Thomas Locker has spent his entire life in service to his two great passions: painting and nature. Through widespread exhibition of his artwork and publication of some 30 different illustrated children's books, Mr. Locker has touched the hearts and minds of countless people. These unique books have been honored with numerous awards, including the prestigious Christopher Award, the John Burroughs Award, and the New York Times Award for best illustration. Judith Orseck Katz is a multi-media artist who has taught and exhibited at Parsons School of Design, Silvermine Guild and with the Catskill Mountain Foundation. She has authored and illustrated two books: "A Painters Guide to the Catskills of Rip Van Winkle" and "A Painter's Guide to For Lauderdale". Besides being an accomplished artist and teacher, Judith leads hikes to Catskill waterfalls for artists and other people interested in the natural beauty of this area. above painting: "Kaaterskill Falls" by Judith Orseck Katz
