Art Talkwith Julia Santos SolomonDate: February 14, 2009 at 1:30pm
Join us in the gallery at Hunter Village Square on Main Street in the village of Hunter, on Saturday, February 14th, starting at 1:30 pm. Sculptor and painter Julia Santos Solomon of Woodstock, NY, will be in the gallery to discuss the influences that drive her to create and that permeate her work in various media. Julia Santos Solomon was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in the United States. She is one of the most successful contemporary Dominican artists on the landscape today. At age 14, she knew she wanted to become an artist, and pursued her goal. After attending the High School of Art and Design in New York, she received a full scholarship to the Rhode Island School of Design. She attended Brown University while still at RISD. She went to Rome, Italy with RISD's European Honor's Program. Over the course of three years, she discovered her kinship with the Italian Renaissance masters. The Italian light awakened her palette and inspired a series of Caribbean landscapes. She became a founding member of The Altos de Chavon School of Design, a Parsons School affiliate, in the Dominican Republic. She moved back to the United States and taught at Parsons School of Design in Manhattan for 18 years. In 1996, she moved to Woodstock, NY. Her work has been exhibited nationally and abroad. Currently, her work is represented in many public collections, including several museums. The bright colors of the Caribbean landscape are an important vehicle for her expression. She portrays the mystery and beauty of the vegetation of the islands in her paintings and the beauty of the people in her sculpture. Her work was featured in the art publications New Art International 2004 and Acrylic Revolution 2007.
