Hi-def Opera
IL VIAGGIO A REIMSDate: Saturday, June 6 at 8pm
Il Viaggio a Reims is Rossini's last opera in the Italian language (all of his later works were in French). Commissioned to celebrate the coronation of French King Charles X in Rheims in 1825, the work has been critically acclaimed as one of Rossini's finest compositions. It is a demanding work, requiring 14 soloists (three sopranos, one contralto, two tenors, four baritones, and four basses). The uniqueness and audacity of the opera is compounded by its plot, which concerns a group of people who plan excitedly for a "viaggio" (journey) to the city of Reims that at the end never happens. The true spirit of the Opera is perfectly captured by this production from Teatro alla Scala. La Scala brings us the visionary production created years ago by the minds of one of Europe's most influential and innovative directors, Italian Luca Ronconi (who directed Puccini's Il Trittico, which Emerging Pictures brought to theatres in the last La Scala Opera Season) and of world renowned Italian architect Gae Aulenti, who created sets and costumes. Since its creation back in 1984, this production has become the quintessential stage production of Il Viaggio a Reims, and finally American audiences will have the chance to experience it. Once again, Teatro alla Scala assembles a formidable cast of professionals, many of whom specialize in the Rossini repertoire, mastering beautifully the vocal range required by the composer's music and the dynamic and fresh acting that characterize Rossini Operas.
Art Talk with Linda Gordetsky and Richard Bruner
Their Passion for PhotographyDate: June 6 at 1pm Richard Bruner has a lifelong passion in photography. His images convey the beauty and color of landscapes, the infinite variety of water and snow in nature, and the often accidental and quickly changing images that are created in reflections. His photographs have been on the covers and in many editions of the Catskill Mountain Region Guide. His work has been exhibited in the Hudson Valley. Linda Gordetsky's goal as a photographer is to captivate the viewer as she was captivated by what she saw through the lens and to stir emotions as she shares that instant when the image was captured. Conditions change and so she excitedly returns to discover and record the wondrously altered views. She will share her passion with you as she shares her photographs.

Hi-def Ballet
STRAVINSKY & THE BALLET RUSSESDate: Saturday, June 20 at 8pm
An evening of one-act ballets on the music by Igor Stravinsky: The Firebird, The Wedding and The Rite of Spring. Stravinsky and commissioned to write the music for a brand new work inspired by the legend of the Russion folktale the Firebird. It was a total success. The Rite of Spring premièred in 1913 causing a veritable scandal. The audience was shocked by the primitive violence and so radically rejected the ballet that it was cancelled after eight performances. Millicent Hodson, (Nijinsky's original choreography), with the help of Marie Rambert, (Nijinsky's assistant) was able to recreate Nijinsky's original Rite of Spring. Stravinsky started to compose The Wedding using folk texts that he adapted, relating the story of a Russian peasant wedding. The score for the first two scenes was finished in the spring of 1915 and the complete work was finished on April 4, 1917.

Diane Galusha
Book TalkDate: Saturday, June 27, 2pm
Margaretville author Diane Galusha's new book, Another Day, Another Dollar: The Civilian Conservation Corps in the Catskills (Black Dome Press, 2008), published on the 75th anniversary of the creation of the Civilian Conservation Corps (the CCC), a Depression-era New Deal program aimed at providing employment for millions of men by hiring them to work in a nationwide "forest army" to combat erosion and reverse decades of environmental abuse, takes a close look at seven camps in the Catskill region, including Camp S-97 in Tannersville. The men of the Tannersville camp, which lasted for three and a half years from May 1934 to October 1937 and was located on a plateau at the base of Clum Hill overlooking Rip Van Winkle Lake, built the campgrounds at North Lake and Devil's Tombstone, worked on gypsy moth eradication, created miles of fire roads and hiking trails, and planted 800,000 trees. Not a mean accomplishment. And this was just one of 161 CCC camps across NY State and over 4,500 such camps across the nation. Galusha's book also examines six other CCC camps in the Catskills -- where city boys and their country cousins, under the tutelage of local woodsmen and mechanics, wielded axes, mattocks and shovels to transform the Catskills in subtle and significant ways.

Images of El Camino PilgrimageDate: June 27 at 1pm
Listed by author Patricia Schultz as among the 1000 Places to See Before You Die, El Camino de Santiago, also known as the Way of St James, is one of the oldest pilgrimage routes in Europe. It is one of only three pilgrimage routes recognized by the Catholic Church on which a plenary indulgence can be earned - the other routes are to Rome and to Jerusalem. Beginning in the Middle Ages, the route has been highly traveled. Mary Ann traveled on the last 150 kilometers, from O Cebreiro to Santiago. "Before starting out, I really wanted to know what the trail itself looked like, but all the sites I googled gave little or no indication. So I photographed the trail from 3 - 8 times an hour. And my photos captured for me not only what trail looks like but also brings back for me the visceral experience of a landscape that one only gets on foot." The Camino is a very personal experience and the photos Mary Ann took are intimate stories of her discoveries. Crossing into Galicia along the Pilgrimage Trail by Mary Ann Glass
